Does topical minoxidil work for hair loss?

Topical minoxidil can help some people with androgenetic, or pattern, hair loss. Response varies, and it does not treat every cause of shedding. Sudden, patchy, unexplained or postpartum hair loss should be assessed rather than assumed to be pattern hair loss.

Regaine is a brand with several products. Strength alone does not tell you the licensed patient group, application frequency or review deadline.

Product examples: do not interchange instructions

The following are UK product examples, not rules for every country's minoxidil products.

Product Licensed group in the cited information Application frequency
Regaine for Women Regular Strength 2% solution Women aged 18–65 with pattern hair loss Twice daily
Regaine for Women Once a Day 5% foam Women aged 18–65 with pattern hair loss Once daily
Regaine for Men Extra Strength 5% foam Men aged 18–49 with pattern hair loss Twice daily

The women's 5% foam is not automatically off-label merely because it is 5%. Equally, instructions for the men's foam should not be copied to women. Check the full leaflet for amount, applicator, age limits and contraindications.

Oral minoxidil is a different treatment with different exposure and risks. Topical instructions do not establish an oral dose or an oral hair-loss licence.

Application and realistic expectations

Apply the product to the scalp as directed, rather than simply coating the hair. Use a dry scalp where the leaflet specifies this, wash hands afterwards and avoid transfer to other people or other body areas. More product or more frequent application does not reliably improve results.

Regrowth takes time. The women's 2% solution information says four months or more may be needed before growth is evident; other products have different assessment and stopping points. Ask a pharmacist which deadline applies to your exact pack.

No single regrowth percentage can predict your result. Continuing treatment may be needed to maintain a response. Compare photographs taken consistently if a clinician recommends monitoring, rather than promising recovery from a marketing statistic.

Safety and when to stop

Do not apply the medicine to an inflamed, infected or painful scalp. Check the leaflet and seek advice about cardiovascular disease, blood-pressure problems, other scalp treatments, pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Stop and seek medical advice for chest pain, rapid heartbeat, faintness, swelling or persistent scalp irritation. Severe chest pain, collapse or breathing difficulty requires emergency care. Accidental swallowing needs urgent advice. Keep the product away from children and avoid contact between children and treated scalp areas.

Choosing treatment and obtaining it

A diagnosis should guide whether topical treatment, another option or investigation is appropriate. This guide does not claim that minoxidil is more effective than finasteride or that a Prescrivia pharmacy partner stocks it.

A local licensed pharmacy can confirm product status and instructions. Availability and suitability should be checked separately.
