What is daily tadalafil?

Tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis, can be prescribed as an on-demand or a once-daily regimen for erectile dysfunction (ED). The EMA Cialis assessment describes these as different approaches requiring a doctor's judgement and review.

For ED, sexual stimulation is still needed. Daily treatment does not create a continuous erection or guarantee a response.

Daily versus on-demand: the practical difference

Approach What the EMA describes What to discuss
On-demand ED treatment A higher-strength tablet before anticipated activity Timing, frequency and whether the medicine is appropriate
Daily ED treatment 5 mg daily, which may be reduced to 2.5 mg according to tolerability Ongoing exposure, adverse effects and regular reassessment
Benign prostate enlargement symptoms, with or without ED A separate 5 mg daily indication Whether urinary symptoms need investigation first

These are descriptions of the authorised Cialis information, not instructions to select a strength yourself. Continuous daily use of the 10 mg or 20 mg ED strengths is not recommended in that information.

Do not add an on-demand tablet to a daily regimen without explicit prescribing advice.

Prostate symptoms are a separate assessment

An authorised use for benign prostatic hyperplasia does not mean every urinary symptom is caused by an enlarged prostate. The clinician needs to assess the symptoms and decide whether examination or testing is needed.

Daily treatment can be convenient for some people, but convenience should not outweigh safety or the need for diagnosis.

Interactions and organ-function cautions

Cialis must not be taken with nitrates or riociguat. Do not stop prescribed heart medicine in order to take tadalafil. The EMA advises against daily dosing in severe kidney problems and requires careful evaluation in liver problems.

Provide a complete medicine list, including medicines for blood pressure or prostate symptoms, before assessment. Tell the clinician about heart disease, previous stroke or heart attack, and any advice to avoid sexual activity.

Side effects and review

The NHS tadalafil guide lists headache, indigestion, back pain and muscle aches among possible effects. Sudden hearing or eyesight changes, chest pain or a prolonged painful erection need urgent medical assessment. Follow the product leaflet's action instructions.

Ask how often treatment will be reviewed and what to do after a missed dose; do not double doses.

For a broader comparison, read Cialis versus Viagra. Prescrivia is a technology intermediary. Independent clinicians decide suitability and licensed pharmacies dispense where applicable. No specific regimen, access or outcome is guaranteed.

General information only, not medical advice. Follow the leaflet for your actual product and discuss decisions with a qualified clinician. See the current clinical, legal and language review statuses for this edition.
