How does an online doctor consultation work?
An online consultation is a medical assessment conducted remotely. An independent doctor reviews health information and decides whether advice, more information, tests, referral or a prescription is appropriate. A prescription and a decision time are not guaranteed. Prescrivia supplies technology connecting patients with independent EU-registered doctors and licensed pharmacies; it does not diagnose or prescribe.
Two consultation formats described here
- Asynchronous assessment: you complete a structured questionnaire and the doctor reviews it later, potentially asking further questions.
- Telephone consultation: you discuss your health with a doctor by telephone.
Both involve a registered clinician. Check which formats a service offers, in which language and when. Remote care must meet applicable professional standards and be sufficient for the clinical decision; digital delivery is not permission to skip examination or tests when needed.
European and national rules
Directive 2011/24/EU addresses cross-border healthcare rights, including information and prescription recognition. It is not a general licence for any online sale, automatic reimbursement or universal electronic-prescription compatibility. National professional, prescribing, dispensing and supply rules still matter.
Germany's model professional-code change in 2018 allowed remote-only care under conditions of medical justification and diligence; the applicable regional rules must still be checked. See the Bundesärztekammer explanation. A doctor's registration and permitted scope need verification, including where care crosses borders.
Who is responsible, and what should you verify?
| Party | Responsibility | Check before relying on the service |
|---|---|---|
| Technology intermediary | Account, communication, routing and platform support | Published role, contact route, applicable terms and data recipients |
| Independent doctor | Whether assessment is sufficient and any prescription is appropriate | Named clinician, current registration with the relevant professional authority, permitted scope and follow-up route |
| Licensed pharmacy | Prescription checks and lawful dispensing | Pharmacy identity, authorisation, exact online-retailer domain where relevant, and the supply rules for your destination |
A company registration, team byline or regulator logo cannot replace these checks. A doctor's willingness to work with a platform does not establish that they reviewed this article. Prescrivia remains pre-production; this educational guide is not confirmation of operational country coverage.
Health data is special-category data under the GDPR. An Article 6 basis and Article 9 condition, security, necessary-purpose limits and transparent recipients are required. Explicit consent is not the only possible healthcare basis. A privacy notice or HTTPS alone does not prove compliance, end-to-end encryption or a particular storage country.
What happens during a consultation?
1. Choose the assessment
Check the service's actual condition scope, age limits, consultation language, clinician registration, price and follow-up arrangements. An information page is not proof that a medicine is available or appropriate in your country.
2. Provide health information
A structured assessment may ask about:
- Medical history, chronic conditions and previous diagnoses.
- All medicines, supplements, allergies and known interactions.
- Current symptoms and their duration or severity.
- Relevant lifestyle factors and measurements, such as weight and height.
- Treatment-specific risks, pregnancy possibility and contraindications.
Give accurate answers and ask for help if a question is unclear. A questionnaire cannot itself determine a diagnosis or guarantee eligibility.
3. Independent review
The doctor considers whether remote assessment is sufficient, whether a requested treatment is appropriate, and whether interactions or other safety concerns require clarification. They may need test results, an examination or specialist input before deciding. Waiting times depend on the service and the case.
4. The clinical decision
| Possible outcome | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Prescription | The doctor judges treatment appropriate and issues a prescription under applicable rules; the pharmacy separately checks dispensing |
| More information or consultation | Clarification, a conversation or a recent test result may be required |
| Referral or in-person assessment | The presentation needs care beyond the remote service's scope |
| Treatment declined | The requested treatment is not appropriate; this is a valid clinical outcome |
On Prescrivia, medical unsuitability before dispensing triggers a refund of 100% of the checkout payment, including all fees, without deductions for services already started or completed. This is the published policy, not a verified execution-time promise. Voluntary cancellation has separate conditions; do not generalise this guarantee to every withdrawal. See the terms.
5. Pharmacy and any supply
If a prescription is issued, a licensed pharmacy checks it and is responsible for dispensing. The actual national prescription and supply route, product availability and any lawful delivery arrangement must be verified. Do not assume that every EU online assessment leads to shipment to a home address. Spain's prescription-distance-sale restriction is explained below.
Remote or in-person care?
| Consideration | Remote consultation | In-person care |
|---|---|---|
| Examination | Suitable only if assessment is adequate without an examination that cannot be provided remotely | Can provide an examination as needed |
| Tests or imaging | Existing results may be reviewed; new tests may require referral | Can arrange or perform appropriate investigations |
| New or complex symptoms | May need escalation rather than a prescription | Assessment may be necessary to establish the cause |
| Stable ongoing conditions | May support follow-up when the service has the right scope and information | Supports examination and continuity as needed |
| Waiting and privacy | Depend on service, setting and communication arrangements | Depend on practice, urgency and setting |
| Emergency | Do not wait for an online decision; call 112 | Do not wait for an ordinary GP appointment; call 112 |
Chest pain, breathing difficulty, sudden severe headache or possible stroke symptoms require urgent assessment, not a routine online prescription request. Call 112 in a life-threatening emergency. Remote convenience must not delay necessary care.
Conditions discussed by remote services
These six areas are examples of assessment topics, not a Prescrivia eligibility list or a recommendation for a medicine:
- Hair and scalp: hair loss and questions about finasteride, dutasteride or minoxidil. Formulation, indication and off-label use require assessment.
- Sexual and reproductive health: erectile dysfunction, contraception, emergency contraception and premature ejaculation. Timing, contraindications and national access rules matter.
- Weight management: assessment of obesity, dietary support and medicines such as GLP-1 receptor agonists where the actual product and indication are authorised.
- Skin: acne, rosacea or established psoriasis; photographs may help but cannot always replace examination.
- Established chronic conditions: follow-up or repeat prescriptions for stable conditions, including thyroid disease or hypertension, only with appropriate information, monitoring and service scope.
- Mental health: some services offer assessment with defined protocols and follow-up; this does not establish that a questionnaire or a particular medicine is suitable.
Emergency or severe mental-health symptoms, complex undiagnosed problems and conditions needing examination or tests require appropriate escalation. Pregnancy, obstetric and paediatric care need the relevant specialised pathways; do not assume a general adult service covers them. No drug named here is recommended to an individual.
Country, language, reimbursement and data
National prescribing and specialist requirements differ. Confirm whether the doctor can provide care in the relevant country and understands your information in the language used; a translated website alone is not a language-service guarantee.
Reimbursement depends on country, insurer, clinician and consultation type. Some German statutory video consultations and French teleconsultations are covered under conditions. This does not establish payment for every remote service or Prescrivia assessment. See KBV and Assurance Maladie.
Data-location and transfer rules also need case-specific assessment. Read the actual privacy notice for recipients, locations, safeguards and rights. Prescrivia states that personal data is not sold; marketing sharing separately requires explicit consent. Necessary processing by doctors, pharmacies and other service providers is distinct. No blanket EEA-only storage or end-to-end encryption guarantee is made here.
Trust checks
Check named clinicians and registrations, clear service limits, no guaranteed prescriptions, appropriate referral routes, privacy and security information, complaints and safety reporting, and how clinical quality and follow-up are handled. Prescrivia does not employ doctors or direct their clinical decisions. Independence is a responsibility to preserve and verify, not automatic proof of a particular outcome or lawful supply arrangement.
Three service models
Online pharmacies accepting existing prescriptions check and dispense valid prescriptions; they do not necessarily provide a new medical assessment. Online ordering and delivery remain subject to national rules.
Telehealth clinics employ or contract clinicians and offer the consultation formats within their actual scope, with any pharmacy relationship separately identified.
Technology intermediaries, such as Prescrivia, connect patients with independent doctors and licensed pharmacies without prescribing, selling or dispensing medicines themselves.
Each model must satisfy the applicable country-specific requirements; the label alone does not establish legality. Compare the actual responsibilities and fees in the service comparison.
Costs to check
Compare the complete amount for the same product, pack, assessment and renewal period. No current market-price ranges are asserted here.
| Component | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Platform and consultation | Separate parties, applicable fees, whether charged once or at each renewal, and any further assessment charge |
| Pharmacy and medicine | Actual prescribed product, pack, quantity, pharmacy price and lawful availability |
| Delivery and other charges | Supported destination, lawful route, delivery, handling, tax and payment-processing charges |
| Recurring payment | Renewal amount and frequency, cancellation steps, further review and what is included each time |
Check bundled prices, renewals, further reviews, cancellation and refund conditions before agreeing. Insurance reimbursement is separate from the amount charged upfront.
The costs and outcomes guide summarises the published terms, including the difference between clinical decline before dispensing and voluntary withdrawal. Those terms remain pending qualified legal review. No refund timing or operational payment route is verified by this article.
Cross-border prescriptions and Spain
Prescription recognition is subject to documentation and national dispensing rules; medicine names and availability may differ. Electronic interoperability is a separate question. See Your Europe on prescriptions abroad.
Spain prohibits distance sale of prescription medicines. Recognition of a prescription does not authorise online sale or shipment. Any proposed Spanish assessment, payment, prescribing, dispensing and delivery arrangement needs qualified legal verification; this article does not declare an uninspected workflow lawful or unlawful. Sources and review limits
The linked Directive, national authorities, medical bodies, insurer guidance and GDPR support the bounded distinctions above. Historic general eHealth pages do not establish the current operation, security or legality of a service. Text edited on 6 October 2026; this is not an approval date. See the current clinical, legal and language review statuses for this edition. No provider workflow, reimbursement, delivery time or refund execution was verified. See the editorial policy and correction route. Translated editions need separate reconciliation and review against the revised source.
