Is generic sildenafil equivalent to Viagra?

Viagra contains sildenafil. An authorised generic sildenafil product contains the same active substance and must meet the applicable regulatory requirements. The EMA generic-medicine framework explains comparison with a reference medicine; bioequivalence concerns the rate and extent of absorption.

An authorised generic is different from an unverified online tablet described as “generic”. Product authorisation, strength and a legitimate supply route matter.

What can differ?

Feature What to check
Active ingredient and strength Confirm sildenafil and the prescribed strength
Other ingredients Excipients can differ; check allergies and tolerability
Appearance and packaging These can vary without determining effectiveness
Price Compare actual local products rather than assume a universal saving
Authorisation A generic has its own authorisation; it does not simply inherit Viagra's licence number

Brand preference does not establish clinical superiority. Equally, differences in ingredients or tolerability should not be dismissed with “no clinical reason” to prefer a particular presentation.

How it is used for ED

The EU Viagra product information concerns erectile dysfunction and requires sexual stimulation for effect. Sildenafil is not a treatment for every cause of low sexual desire.

Follow the prescribed product's instructions. Do not use another person's dose or combine ED medicines without advice. Other sildenafil indications, such as pulmonary arterial hypertension, use different treatment plans.

Nitrates and other safety checks

Viagra must not be taken with nitrates or riociguat. Tell the clinician about chest-pain medicines, recreational products, blood-pressure treatments and all other medicines. Do not stop prescribed heart treatment to make room for an ED tablet.

Clinical suitability also depends on cardiovascular health and other conditions; authorised manufacture does not make the medicine appropriate for everyone.

Vision changes are not automatically harmless

The NHS sildenafil guidance lists temporary visual changes among possible effects and advises avoiding driving if vision is affected.

The Viagra information says to stop treatment and seek immediate medical advice for a sudden visual defect. An erection lasting more than four hours requires immediate medical assistance. Chest pain or breathing difficulty also requires urgent assessment. Do not treat these as ordinary inconveniences or wait for an online reply.

Comparing ED options

Read Cialis versus Viagra for a discussion of different medicines. The useful comparison includes suitability, timing and adverse effects, rather than a promise that one always works better.

Prescrivia is a technology intermediary. Independent clinicians decide whether treatment is appropriate, and licensed pharmacies dispense where applicable. No brand, prescription, access or outcome is guaranteed.
