What is Rogaine or Regaine?

These are brand names used for topical minoxidil in different markets. This page describes Spain’s Regaine 50 mg/g cutaneous foam for adult men and separately identifies UK Regaine for Women Once a Day 5% foam. It does not establish the authorisation or availability of a Spanish women’s product.

Minoxidil can stimulate and prolong the hair-growth phase; its exact mechanism is not fully understood. It does not reduce DHT like finasteride. Neither mechanism guarantees a response.

Who is it for?

Do not use either named foam if you are allergic to minoxidil or any of its ingredients.

The Spanish men’s foam treats androgenetic alopecia in men from 18 years. It is not for women or children. Sudden or patchy loss, an unknown cause or no family history requires assessment; these are not the named product’s indication.

The UK women’s foam is for female pattern hair loss at ages 18–65. It is not for men, childbirth-related hair loss or unexplained loss. Its contraindications include treated or untreated hypertension, scalp abnormalities, a shaved scalp, allergy to a component, and use of occlusive dressings or other topical medicines. Do not use it during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Product-specific application

Product Quantity and frequency Response and stopping point
Spain: Regaine 50 mg/g men’s foam 1 g (half a capful) twice daily, morning and evening; maximum 2 g/day, containing 100 mg minoxidil Improvement may appear at 2–4 months; stop if none after 4 months
UK: women’s 5% foam 1 g (half a capful) once daily; maximum 1 g/day Improvement may take 12–24 weeks; stop if none after 24 weeks

These are foam quantities, not millilitres of a solution. A 50 mg/g concentration equals 5% by weight. Do not apply a universal twice-daily schedule to women’s products. No solution or oral-minoxidil regimen is supplied here.

Apply only to completely dry, healthy scalp and hair, covering the affected area with the total stated dose. Wash hands afterwards. Do not apply elsewhere or to inflamed, infected, irritated or painful scalp. More product or more frequent application does not improve results.

Avoid eyes, mouth and other sensitive surfaces; rinse accidental contact with plenty of cool water. Avoid transferring the product to the face or to children, including skin contact with treated areas. Keep it out of children’s reach: accidental swallowing can cause serious heart effects. Follow the exact pack’s drying and flammable-container precautions.

Initial shedding and continued use

Increased shedding can begin 2–6 weeks after starting and usually subsides within a couple of weeks. It is not unconditional reassurance of success. The Spanish label says to stop and consult if shedding persists; the UK women’s label explicitly says to stop and consult if shedding lasts more than 2 weeks.

If regrowth occurs, ongoing appropriate use is needed to maintain it; hair loss resumes after stopping. Do not ignore stop criteria or adverse effects merely to preserve regrowth.

Adverse effects

Frequencies differ between the two labels. In the Spanish men’s foam label, headache, itching, dermatitis, rash and unwanted non-scalp hair are common; dizziness, nausea and peripheral swelling are uncommon; palpitations, tachycardia and chest pain are rare. Hypotension, severe allergic reactions and application-site reactions have unknown frequency.

The UK women’s foam label instead classifies headache as very common and chest pain and peripheral swelling as common. This difference is not proof that one product is safer; each label draws on its stated trial and post-marketing evidence. Do not copy a frequency from one product to the other.

Stop minoxidil and seek medical assessment for low blood pressure, chest pain, a rapid heartbeat, faintness or dizziness, sudden unexplained weight gain, swollen hands or feet, persistent scalp redness/irritation or any new unexpected symptom. Severe chest pain, breathing difficulty or face/throat swelling requires urgent care. Do not drive if dizzy or affected by low blood pressure.

Interactions and alternatives

The named products must not be used with other topical scalp medicines, including corticosteroids, tretinoin or dithranol, because absorption can change. This combination restriction is not an instruction to stop another prescribed medicine yourself. Contact the prescriber to review the regimen.

Known cardiovascular disease or arrhythmia requires advice before use. Mention blood-pressure medicines, kidney/liver disease and all scalp conditions.

Oral finasteride, such as Propecia 1 mg, has different restrictions and mood/sexual warnings. A restriction on topical scalp combinations is not automatically an instruction about oral finasteride; the latter combination still requires individual assessment, and this page does not promise additive benefit. Oral minoxidil is also a different treatment: a prescription requirement is not proof of an authorised alopecia indication.

Independent assessment

Prescrivia is a technology intermediary connecting patients with independent doctors. It does not prescribe, employ doctors or sell medicines. Provide hair-loss history, conditions and medication for assessment. Any prescription and pharmacy dispensing depend on clinical suitability, the exact product, applicable rules and availability. No prescription, supply or hair-growth outcome is guaranteed.

In Spain, distance sale of prescription medicines is prohibited under Article 3.5 of Royal Legislative Decree 1/2015. An online assessment does not remove this restriction. Dispensing and access depend on the exact product and applicable national rules.

Frequently asked questions

What is Rogaine used for?
Rogaine is a minoxidil brand name used in some markets. This page distinguishes Spain's Regaine 50 mg/g foam for adult men from UK Regaine for Women Once a Day 5% foam for women aged 18–65. The exact product determines the authorised population and instructions.
How does minoxidil work?
Its hair-growth mechanism is not fully understood. It can stimulate and prolong the growth phase of follicles. It does not reduce DHT as finasteride does; a different mechanism does not establish suitability for every person.
How long does it take to work?
For Spain's men's foam, improvement may appear after 2–4 months; stop if there is no improvement after 4 months. The UK women's foam has a separate 12–24 week response window and 24-week stopping criterion. Early shedding is not a guarantee that treatment is working.
Can I access minoxidil online in Europe?
Supply conditions depend on the exact product and country. A topical label does not establish an authorised hair-loss indication for oral minoxidil. Prescrivia connects patients with independent doctors for assessment; it does not prescribe or dispense, and does not guarantee access.
Are foam and solution interchangeable?
No. Concentration, excipients, population and application schedules matter. A solution may contain propylene glycol, while the named foams have other potentially irritating excipients. Lower absorption does not prove less unwanted facial hair or equivalent efficacy at every regimen.
