What is Hyoscine Butylbromide?
Hyoscine Butylbromide — best known by the brand name Buscopan in many European markets — is an antispasmodic medicine used to relieve abdominal pain and cramps caused by smooth muscle spasm in the gastrointestinal tract and urinary system. It belongs to the antimuscarinic (anticholinergic) class of medicines.
Hyoscine butylbromide is a quaternary ammonium compound with limited brain penetration. It differs from hyoscine hydrobromide used for travel sickness. Limited penetration does not exclude drowsiness, confusion or visual impairment.
The Spanish oral Buscapina indication covers spasms of the gastrointestinal, biliary and genitourinary tracts. Abdominal cramps require an appropriate diagnosis; the label does not establish treatment for every cause of IBS symptoms or menstrual pain.
How does Hyoscine Butylbromide work?
Hyoscine Butylbromide is a competitive antagonist of muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (primarily M1, M2, and M3 subtypes) in smooth muscle tissue of the gut and urinary tract. By blocking these receptors, it prevents acetylcholine from binding and triggering muscle contraction.
The result is relaxation of smooth muscle in:
- The wall of the intestine (reducing gut motility and intestinal cramping)
- The bile ducts and gallbladder
- The ureter and urinary bladder
This peripheral antimuscarinic action can relieve spasm but does not treat its underlying cause or exclude central adverse effects.
Who is Hyoscine Butylbromide for?
Spanish Buscapina 10 mg is for adults and children over 6 years with the indicated spasms. New or unexplained pain should be assessed before repeated use.
The contraindications are listed below. As a precaution, the Spanish label prefers avoiding use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Dosage
The following belongs specifically to Spanish Buscapina 10 mg coated tablets for adults and children over 6 years, not to every hyoscine product:
| Formulation | Dose | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Buscapina 10 mg oral tablets | 10–20 mg | 3–5 times daily |
| Maximum daily dose, Buscapina 10 mg | 100 mg | Do not exceed |
Swallow whole with liquid, without chewing. Do not use continuously or for long periods without investigating the cause of abdominal pain. This product-specific maximum is not an instruction to increase an existing prescription. Other brands, injections and combination products are not interchangeable.
Side effects
Uncommon effects
Dry mouth, tachycardia, abnormal sweating, itching, urticaria and other skin reactions are uncommon in the Spanish label.
Rare effects
Urinary retention is rare. Seek prompt medical help if you cannot pass urine.
Effects with unknown frequency and serious symptoms
Anaphylaxis, breathing difficulty and other hypersensitivity reactions have unknown frequency. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty or swelling. A painful red eye with impaired vision requires urgent assessment for angle-closure glaucoma. Drowsiness, confusion or blurred vision can impair driving.
Hyoscine Butylbromide vs other digestive treatments
| Medicine | Class | Role | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hyoscine butylbromide | Antispasmodic | Relief of indicated spasms | Does not treat every cause of pain |
| Lubiprostone | Intestinal secretagogue | US indications include selected constipation conditions | US indications do not establish Spanish authorisation |
These treatments are not interchangeable. An independent clinician must identify the cause and applicable product.

Important safety information
Do not use Spanish Buscapina if you have: allergy to the ingredient or excipients; untreated narrow-angle glaucoma; prostatic hypertrophy; urinary retention from urethral/prostate disease; mechanical gastrointestinal or pyloric narrowing; paralytic or obstructive ileus; tachycardia; megacolon; or myasthenia gravis. Its sucrose content also excludes hereditary fructose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption or sucrase-isomaltase deficiency.
Tell your doctor: about all medicines, particularly other anticholinergics, antihistamines, antidepressants, antipsychotics, metoclopramide and beta-adrenergic medicines, because effects may be increased or opposed.
Seek urgent medical attention if you experience:
- Severe abdominal pain that is new, worsening, or accompanied by fever
- Blood in your stools or black/tarry stools
- Unintended weight loss
- Difficulty swallowing
These symptoms may indicate a serious underlying condition that requires urgent medical investigation, not antispasmodic treatment.
Important: Hyoscine Butylbromide relieves the symptoms of cramping — it does not treat the underlying cause. If your symptoms are new, severe, or not responding to treatment, an independent doctor should evaluate you.
The Spanish Buscapina label also states that it must not be administered at the same time as cholinergic medicines. Have the prescriber or pharmacist check the complete medication list.
