What is Canesten Gyno?
Canesten Gyno (clotrimazole) is an antifungal medicine used to treat vaginal candidiasis, commonly referred to as vaginal thrush or a yeast infection. It is one of the most widely used antifungal treatments in Europe and is listed on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.
Canesten Gyno is available as vaginal pessaries (tablets inserted into the vagina) in doses of 100 mg, 200 mg, and 500 mg, as well as external cream for symptomatic relief of vulval itching and irritation. The 500 mg single-dose pessary is the most commonly prescribed formulation for convenience and adherence.
How does Canesten Gyno work?
Clotrimazole belongs to the azole class of antifungals. It works by inhibiting an enzyme called lanosterol 14-alpha-demethylase, which is essential for the synthesis of ergosterol — a critical component of the fungal cell membrane. Without adequate ergosterol:
- The fungal cell membrane becomes structurally unstable
- Cell membrane permeability increases, allowing intracellular contents to leak out
- Fungal cell growth and replication are halted (fungistatic effect)
- At higher concentrations, clotrimazole can also directly kill fungal cells (fungicidal effect)
This mechanism selectively targets fungal cells while leaving human cells largely unaffected, because human cell membranes use cholesterol rather than ergosterol as their primary sterol component.
Who is Canesten Gyno for?
Canesten Gyno is indicated for adult women with vaginal candidiasis caused by Candida species (most commonly Candida albicans). It is appropriate for women who:
- Have confirmed or strongly suspected vaginal thrush based on symptoms (itching, white cottage-cheese-like discharge, vulval soreness)
- Have previously had a confirmed diagnosis of vaginal candidiasis and recognise the same symptoms
Se recomienda evaluación médica antes del autotratamiento si:
- This is your first suspected episode of vaginal thrush
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You are under 16 years of age
- You have had more than two infections in the past six months
- You have unusual symptoms (sores, abnormal discharge, pelvic pain, fever)
- You have diabetes, HIV, or are immunocompromised
Posología
The appropriate Canesten Gyno formulation depends on the severity and recurrence of the infection, as specified by the prescribing doctor.
| Formulación | Dosis | Duración |
|---|---|---|
| Pessary 500 mg | 1 pessary | Single dose (1 night) |
| Pessary 200 mg | 1 pessary per night | 3 nights |
| Pessary 100 mg | 1 pessary per night | 6 nights |
| Cream 2% (external) | Apply 2–3 times daily | As needed for vulval symptoms |
Application: Pessaries should be inserted as high as possible into the vagina using the applicator provided, preferably at bedtime. The cream is applied externally to the vulva and surrounding skin to relieve itching.
Efectos secundarios
Canesten Gyno is generally well tolerated. Local reactions are the most commonly reported effects.
Efectos secundarios frecuentes
- Vaginal burning or stinging (particularly immediately after insertion)
- Vaginal itching (may temporarily worsen before improving)
- Vaginal discharge (may increase initially)
- Mild pelvic discomfort or cramping
Efectos secundarios poco frecuentes
- Skin rash or redness at the application site
- Vulval swelling or oedema
- Peeling or blistering of skin (with external cream)
Efectos raros pero graves
- Systemic allergic reactions are extremely rare with vaginal application due to minimal systemic absorption
If symptoms worsen significantly during treatment, discontinue use and consult a doctor.
Canesten Gyno vs alternative antifungal treatments
| Tratamiento | Principio activo | Vía | Posología |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canesten Gyno | Clotrimazole | Vaginal pessary / cream | Single dose or 3–6 nights |
| Diflucan | Fluconazole | Oral tablet | Single 150 mg dose |
| Nystan | Nystatin | Vaginal pessary | 14 nights |
| Canesten (skin) | Clotrimazole | Topical cream | For skin/nail infections |
Consideraciones clave:
- Canesten Gyno vs Diflucan: Both are effective for uncomplicated vaginal candidiasis. Diflucan (fluconazole) is a single oral tablet, which some patients prefer for convenience. Canesten Gyno acts locally in the vagina with minimal systemic absorption, which may be preferred in pregnancy or for patients who cannot take oral medicines.
- Canesten Gyno vs Nystan: Nystatin requires a longer treatment course (14 days) and is generally less convenient. It is typically reserved for patients where azoles are not appropriate.
How to access Canesten Gyno online in Europe
While some Canesten Gyno formulations are available over the counter in parts of Europe, prescription access is required in many countries, and medical assessment is strongly recommended for recurring or uncertain cases.

Información importante de seguridad
Consulte a un médico antes de utilizar Canesten Gyno si usted:
- Are pregnant (especially in the first trimester — a doctor must assess suitability)
- Have symptoms that could indicate a sexually transmitted infection rather than thrush
- Have a history of recurrent vaginal infections (may indicate an underlying condition requiring investigation)
- Are using vaginal medication or a vaginal ring contraceptive
Interacciones medicamentosas: Clotrimazole can weaken latex contraceptive devices. No clinically significant drug interactions are expected with systemic medications due to minimal absorption from vaginal application.
Infecciones recurrentes: If you experience four or more episodes of vaginal candidiasis per year, a doctor should investigate potential underlying causes including diabetes, antibiotic use, hormonal changes, or immune system factors.

Frequently asked questions
- What is Canesten Gyno used for?
- Canesten Gyno (clotrimazole) is an antifungal medicine used to treat vaginal yeast infections (vaginal candidiasis), commonly known as thrush. It is available as a pessary (vaginal tablet) and cream, and is effective against Candida albicans and other Candida species that cause vaginal infections.
- How quickly does Canesten Gyno work?
- Single-dose formulations (500 mg pessary) typically begin to relieve symptoms such as itching and discharge within 24 to 48 hours of use. Full clearance of the infection is generally confirmed within 7 days. If symptoms persist beyond one week, a doctor should be consulted.
- Can I use Canesten Gyno during my period?
- It is generally recommended to avoid using pessaries during menstruation. If your period begins during treatment, it is advisable to wait until after your period ends, or switch to the cream formulation temporarily. Your doctor or pharmacist can advise on the best approach.
- Does Canesten Gyno affect contraception?
- Clotrimazole creams and pessaries may damage latex condoms and diaphragms, reducing their effectiveness as contraception. Avoid using latex barrier contraception during treatment and for at least five days after completing a course. Non-latex alternatives can be used.
- When should I see a doctor instead of treating myself?
- You should consult a doctor if: this is your first episode of vaginal thrush, symptoms do not improve within a week of treatment, you experience recurring infections (four or more per year), you are pregnant, or you have unusual symptoms such as sores, ulcers, or abnormal discharge colour. A doctor can confirm the diagnosis and rule out other causes.
